Sedation Dentistry

Do you experience apprehension at the thought of visiting a dentist? Dental anxiety affects 40 million Americans, according to the Academy of General Dentistry. This common phobia negatively impacts smiles and lives. When patients don’t receive the care they need, dental issues worsen and wreak havoc with oral and overall health.

Our DOCS-certified dentists provide proven sedation methods to alleviate anxiety. You may be a candidate for sedation dentistry if you:

  • Feel nervous or fearful when visiting the dentist
  • Continually put off dental care
  • Require numerous and/or lengthy dental procedures
  • Haven’t seen a dentist in years
  • Don’t like the way a dental office looks, sounds, or smells
  • Have trouble holding your mouth open for long periods of time due to neuromuscular or other issues
  • Want to maximize your time by completing numerous dental treatments in a single appointment

Which sedation method is right for me?

We offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation. The dentist will discuss your fears and evaluate your dental needs to determine the best method for you.

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is inhaled through a nasal mask during treatment. Patients experience feelings of calm, warmth, and safety. The effects of nitrous diminish quickly following treatment, which allows patients to immediately resume normal activities.
  • Oral sedation patients take a pill prior to treatment and enter a state of complete relaxation in which they can converse with staff but remain blissfully unaware of treatment details. This type of sedation requires that patients have someone drive them to and from their appointment. The relaxing effects of oral sedation diminish gradually. Most people get back to their normal routine the evening of their oral sedation dentistry appointment.
  • IV sedation, the deepest form of sedation offered at our practice, is provided by our trusted doctors with advanced training in oral surgery and sedation. Patients who undergo IV sedation receive medication directly into the bloodstream. IV sedation produces feelings of intense relaxation. Patients are not “under,” but they may feel so peaceful that they doze off during their treatments. If your procedures require IV sedation, please arrange for a friend or family member to transport you to and from our office and stay with you the evening of your appointment. You’ll most likely resume your regular activities the day following your treatments.
